Everyone knows how serious it is to drink and drive. Not only does drunk driving have serious legal consequences, it can cause life changing injuries if you are involved in an accident. The government did a study that compared drunk driving and distracted driving to measure the differences in behavior. What they found was that people on their cell phones were more likely to be involved in an accident in their experiment. This is because people on a cell phone tend to take their eyes off the road longer than drunk drivers and tend to have slower reaction times.
This is not to suggest that drinking and driving is somehow safe, however. The same study found that drunk drivers were far more likely to be aggressive behind the wheel which can lead to more serious accidents. Therefore it is best for people to remain sober and stay off their phones when driving.
In Michigan, it is illegal for a person to use a cell phone or wireless device while driving. A first violation carries with it a $100 fine with each subsequent fine raised to $200. But more important than these fines, using your phone while driving can have serious repercussions if you cause an accident. Nothing is more important that it can’t wait until your off the road to use your phone.
