As a Michigan personal injury lawyer, I see all types of injury cases. Too often, someone who is minding his or her own business is injured or attacked by an aggressive dog. In the worst cases, someone may suffer disfiguring injuries or may be killed in such an attack.

One Flint City councilman is working to change to increase the penalties for any pit bull owner whose dog attacks another person. According to news reports, Councilman Sheldon Neely has proposed a new ordinance forcing pit bull owners to register their dog with police. In the event their dog gets loose and attacks, the owner may face a fine along with jail time. The proposal comes after many attacks this summer, according to the councilman.

Michigan Personal Injury Lawyer Discusses Dog Attack Statistics

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state more than 4.7 million people are bitten yearly by dogs, with 800,000 seeking medical attention, 386,000 requiring an emergency room visit and 16 of them dying. The CDC said the injury rate is highest for children between the ages of five and nine and offers some basic tips to help protect you and your loved ones from dog bites.

Since injury rates are highest among many age groups of children, it is important to educate children on safety around all types of dogs.

  • Do not approach an unfamiliar dog.
  • Do not run from a dog and scream.
  • Do not play with a dog unless an adult is supervising.
  • If knocked over by a dog, immediately roll into a ball and lie still.
  • Avoid direct eye contact with a dog.

If you or your loved one has suffered serious injuries an attack by a dog, it is important to speak with a Michigan personal injury lawyer who can help you determine the next steps to take. Call for your free, initial consultation.
