It may be easy to become complacent while traveling on the road. Most people drive so often, they may forget basic steps to keep them and their loved ones safe. As an experienced Detroit car accident lawyer, I know too well the tragedies that may occur when proper safety measures are not followed.

Oftentimes the summer months mark an increase in accidents across the country. Many people set off for family vacations and road trips. Prevention and proper planning help reduce the number of accidents and serious injuries from driving on the road.

These tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration can help ensure you and your loved ones are safe.

  • Make sure to always buckle up. No matter the distance of your travel, a seatbelt helps decrease deaths and serious injuries in motor vehicle accidents. According to the NHTSA, seat belts have saved nearly 63,000 lives in a five-year period.
  • Check your tires. Before heading off for a longer trip, it is important to check your tire’s air pressure, tread wear and the condition of your spare. According to estimates, nearly 200 people die in crashes every year related to the condition of tires and nearly 11,000 crashes can be blamed on poor tire maintenance.
  • Take time to check your child safety restraints. All car seats and boosters should be properly installed to best protect the child using them. Adjust straps as needed and, if using the LATCH system, make sure all latches are attached as they should be.
  • Pay attention. Distracted driving accounts for at least 3,300 deaths yearly in the past several years along with more than 400,000 injuries. While many people immediately think of texting while driving, distracted driving also includes using any smartphone or cell phone, eating and drinking, using a GPS, watching a video and similar activities.

By taking steps to make your driving safer, you can help protect those you love as well those traveling on the roads at the same time as you.
